Sensory Tray Idea: Flower Garden

Soil in the shape of a flower surrounded by small pots, toy shovels, and live flowers ready to be planted

We first set up this flower garden sensory bin for a Mother’s Day event with The Mom Walk Co., and it was an instant hit. Kids from babies up to ten years old all jumped right in. Older kids loved picking out a live flower to “plant” in a pot for their moms, while the younger ones were just happy digging in the dirt and exploring.

This has become one of our favorite sensory trays. Partially because it looks pretty, but more importantly it’s genuinely fun to explore and works for so many ages. We’ve brought it back again and again, and it never gets old.

Bonus: In the spring, most of the supplies (gloves, pots, shovels, watering cans) can be found at Dollar Tree or in the Target Dollar Spot, making this an easy and affordable setup to recreate.

Supplies:

  • Meka Tuff Tray (We used the large size to accommodate more children, but if this is for a home project for less children, the small size works well too!)

  • Potting soil or coconut coir (We originally used potting soil, but if you’re not planning to pot the flowers, coconut coir may work better. It’s softer, cleaner, doesn’t have a strong smell, and avoids the spores, chemicals, and critters that can come with potting soil. Coconut coir comes packed in bricks and is easily expanded with water. I’d recommend doing this the day before you plan to play so that the coir has time to dry out a bit.)

  • Mini shovels

  • Kid sized gardening gloves

  • Mini watering cans

  • Small nursery pots

  • Flowers (we used a combination of real and fake flowers, choose whatever works best for you!)
